Sometimes from sorrow, for no reason, you sing. For no reason, you accept
the way of being lost, cutting loose
from all else and electing a world
where you go where you want to.
Arbitrary, a sound comes, a reminder
that a steady center is holding
all else. If you listen, that sound
will tell you where it is and you
can slide your way past trouble.
Certain twisted monsters
always bar the path ~ but that's when
you get going best, glad to be lost,
learning how real it is
here on earth, again and again.
William Stafford, Cutting Loose
A new year, reborn from the drunken ashes of the old. Burning things seems to be the most popular way of ritualizing this transition: old journals, daytimers, bridges..... Is it as simple as walking from one calendar into another, leaving one life behind and moving toward the bright, unblemished horizon of the next ? Or is it our resolution to dance with change that works the alchemy of transforming one remembered year, bitter or sweet, into the chance for something different ?
If the astrology of this next year has anything useful to say, it would tell you to "cut loose " from your old notions of who you think you are and open wide the sails of curiosity when the winds of change begin to blow. And blow they will, soon enough.
We are at the start of a long Mars retrograde, Mars being the planet of desire, who puts into motion all we hope and dream for. When Mars appears to be moving backward, or retrograde, our hopes and dreams are put on hold for a time. Until March 10, 2010 to be exact.
Meaning this winter should be a time of thoughtful preparation, in terms of rest and gathering resources. Trying to push forward too soon may result in frustration, arguments, and delays caused by accidents ~ all evidence of poor planning and timing.
We are also in the middle of an intense conversation between Pluto, the planet of Death and Rebirth, and Saturn, the planet of Manifestation. The last time these two were involved was in 2001. The oppositional antagonism at that time manifested in the events of 911. Whoah.....is right.
This time, there is an intensity that people are feeling internally, most commonly in those parts of their lives that aren't working and need to "die off" in order for something new to come into being. The lunar eclipse on Dec 31st brings up issues of safety, comfort, and security and will probably get a big push from these two in the coming months. Not a good prognosis for recovery in the economy any time soon.
We may get more information about what's ahead when the eclipse window closes on January 14th with a solar eclipse in Capricorn, the same day Mercury goes direct. It appears that Time itself is undergoing a radical change.
If you are in the habit of speeding up when feeling anxious, the contrary advice would be to slow.....way......down...... in order to get the crucial information you need to move more effectively.
There is a crazy wisdom at work here, suggesting that doing the unexpected or surprising thing may be the wisest path. You might get some sense of direction from looking back on old dreams you've abandoned along the common sense highway.
Look to the back roads of your psyche for what used to light you up, and set you on fire. Don't mind the faded signs that say,
"Here there be dragons," for those are just old fears talking that same old tired trash.
So what is your intuition saying as you read these words? When was the last time you listened and trusted enough to act on it? William Stafford counsels that listening to this arbitrary sound may help you to "Slide your way past trouble." Looking at what's in store for us, I couldn't agree more.
So go ahead, plan to take a chance when the right time comes, and make a new friend of the Unknown, "Glad to be lost, learning how real it is here on earth, again and again."
